SKIN TAG (ACROCHORDON)

A skin tag is a little benign growth of thick skin primarily found on skin folds like the neck, armpit and groin. Sometimes it may appear around the eyes, upper chest or anywhere else on the body. A skin tag may hang out from the skin on a stalk and when rubbed against, can be a bit painful.

Skin tags tend to occur more in older people. Apart from age, it is more prone in people who are over-weight, pregnant or who are resistant to insulin and the human papilloma (wart) virus. There may be some heredity factor too as there is a genetic tendency to developing it. At any rate it occurs in close to 50% of the world's population.

It is generally believed skin tags occur due to the rubbing together of skin parts or of clothing on the skin. It could also be caused by bunches of collagen fibres and blood vessels trapped inside the thicker pieces of skin, sometimes surrounded by fat cells.
