Since the start of series production of the overrunning alternator pulley in 1996, Schaeffler has produced more than 250 million OAP units. Thanks to its unbeatable OE expertise, years of experience and precise manufacturing, Schaeffler continues to set the industry standard in the OAP segment. Incidentally: Every fourth passenger car worldwide is now equipped with an INA overrunning alternator pulley. This makes Schaeffler the undisputed world market leader. Not least because the overrunning alternator pulley technology is constantly being developed and optimized.


Know-how of the inventor and world market leader

For the protection of the front end auxiliary drive

Due to its mode of operation, a classic combustion engine generates rotational irregularities on the crankshaft, which are transmitted via the belt to the front end auxiliary drive. Since engines in modern vehicles are also becoming increasingly compact and the demands on driving comfort and electrical performance are constantly rising, more powerful generators are being used. These have a higher mass moment of inertia and additionally vibrate the front end auxiliary drive.

A rigid pulley on the rotor of the alternator cannot sufficiently prevent the rotational irregularities, as it does not allow any rotational movements. The permanent vibrations can lead to damage to the auxiliary unit operation. Schaeffler engineers recognized this very early on and developed the idea for the Overrunning Alternator Pulley (OAP) as early as 1995.


The INA OAP sets standards in the market

Since its invention, Schaeffler has been setting standards in the market with the overrunning alternator pulley under the INA brand. The complexity of this innovation is demonstrated by the sophisticated inner workings. While drive pulleys from other manufacturers are usually fitted with machined components, the design principle of INA's solution with needle roller bearings ensures higher load carrying capacity and economical production. Further advantages of the component from Schaeffler: smoother running of the entire front end auxiliary drive, higher efficiency, reduced wear and lower fuel consumption.
