Star anise is the seed pod from the fruit of the Illicium verum plant, an evergreen shrub native to Southwest China.
It's unrelated to regular anise, though they share a similar flavor. Star anise one of the five spices in Chinese five-spice blends, along with cloves, cinnamon, Sichuan pepper and ground fennel seeds.

It is one of the main flavors in Chinese five spice powder and is also used to season roast duck and other meats.Star anise is also a common spice in Indian cuisine.Store the powder in an air-tight container away from moisture, heat, and sunlight.Star anise powder will remain fresh and vibrantly flavored for about one year, whereas the spice will begin to lose flavor after about six months.

八角茴香的果实可入药;其性温，味辛;有温阳散寒，理气止痛之功效。 用于治疗寒呕逆，寒疝腹痛，肾虚腰痛，干、湿脚气等症。 另外，它的果实含有挥发油，主要成分是茴香油，分别为茴香醚、茴香醛和茴香酮，它能刺激胃肠神经血管，促进消化液分泌，增加胃肠蠕动，有健胃、行气的功效，有助于缓解痉挛、减轻疼痛。
