Vetiver grass is a densely tufted bunch grass which can be easily established in both tropics and temperate regions of the world and most closely related to Sorghum but shares many morphological characteristics with other fragrant grasses, such as lemongrass, citronella, and palmarosa. Vetiver grass is a unique tropical plant that has been used for:

- soil and water conservation

- land rehabilitation

- pollution control

- water quality improvement

- other environmental applications

 

Special Characteristics

- Fast growth rate

- Powerful and deep root system

- Hardly and resiliently extremely

 i) Life temperature range: <12°C to >55°C

ii) Life annual rainfall range: 300mm to 700mm

iii) Life soil pH range: 3 to 11

- Non invasive

- Tolerant to all heavy metal

- Few pest and diseases

 

Advantages:

- Soil stabilization, erosion control and groundwater retention

- Remove nitrates, phosphates and heavy metals contaminants

- Tolerant to soil with high and low pH, salinity and heavy metals

 

Application in Soil Stabilization

i) Suitable for:

- High, medium or non-slope area

- Water source area

- Road shoulder area

- Vegetative bedding area

 

ii) Planting Method:

Install on the contour, at a 1m - 2m horizontal spacing between barriers. Spacing may vary depends on slope conditions. High slope area will require smaller spacing between each barriers.

For canals waterways, watercourses, planting horizontally in row along the waterways or watercourses, 50 cm from the canal rim or river bank.

Application in Water Treatment

Vetiver grass can be placed on floating material and left in polluted pond/lake for water treatment.
