Hexane is a significant constituent of gasoline. It is a colorless liquid, odorless when pure, and with boiling points approximately 69 °C (156 °F). It is widely used as a cheap, relatively safe, largely unreactive, and easily evaporated non-polar solvent.
Hexane is preferable solvent for lacquer, paint and enamel thinners, also in ink reducers and cleaning solvents (cleansing and degreasing a variety of items, and in textile manufacturing). In industry, hexanes are widely used in the formulation of glues for shoes, leather products, and roofing.
It is highly flammable. Its vapors are heavier than air, can travel and ignite. As an organic solvent, its vapour can irritate the skin and eyes, damage the lungs and respiratory system, as well as the central nervous system when inhaled.
