Winsor & Newton Professional Retouching Varnish Retouching varnish is a UV resistant gloss varnish which gives temporary protection to recently completed oil paintings, however unlike artists’ varnishes it is possible to paint on top of Retouching Varnish. To achieve this, it is best to keep subsequent layers of colour as "fat" as possible (thinned with lots of medium) and applied as finely as possible. A layer of artists' varnish should then be applied after the last application has been allowed to dry for 6 months. Varnishes provide a transparent coating which protects your finished painting from dirt & dust. Picture varnishes are usually removable, enabling the painting to be cleaned in the future. Varnishes should not be used as mediums for adding to the colour. Artisan paintings should not be varnished until thoroughly dry (at least 6 months). There are three Artisan varnishes available – Gloss, Matt and Satin depending upon the desired finish. The painting will benefit from being degreased before varnishing. This can be done with either Artisan Thinner or Artists’ White Spirit (mineral spirits). Simply wipe over the surface of the picture sparingly and leave to dry overnight. Wiping it very lightly over with white spirit allows you to clean the surface from any grease or grime that has got onto the surface. If there was any trace of grease on your painting and you varnished without cleaning it off, the varnish would reticulate into beads where the grease is. The cleaning ensures that the varnish applies well. For oil painting Removable Made in France Direcitons:For recently finished paintings. Ensure painting is touch dry and spray thinly. Use outdoors or in a well-ventilated area at temperature greater than 5 Celsius. Shake can well before use and hold approximately 30cm / 12 inches from the surface. For best result spray artwork flat. When finished, hold can upside down and spray for a few second to prevent clogging. Do not use as a medium.
