If a runner is significantly shorter than the table, it can be used to highlight a centerpiece, while a longer runner ideally hangs down a bit over the table ends without touching the seats or guests seated there. Ideally, it should hang at least six inches over each end of your table but should not be further lower than your tablecloth.

If the table runner has tassels, it should be longer than the table length, so that the tassels hang down instead of sitting atop the table. It can be used as a bed runner to perk up the look of your bed.
