The rice wine business started in Mantin, a small town in the stateof Negeri Sembilan and the business subsequently shifted to thetown of Seremban after WWI as the business gradually expanded.
The production and distillation processes in Malaysia were nodiffrent from those that were practiced in Luin May Sieh (village inthe Tong’an district located at the southern region of the Fujianprovince of China) as this was necessary to achieve the quality andaroma of the rice wine produced.As the rice wine business become more established, theMalaysian Custom set up an office in the distillery to monitorand collect excise duties, except during WWII when all taxeswere collected by the Japanese Army during their Occupationin Malaya between 1942 and 1945. The rice wine business waseventually incorporated in 1958 and is currently under thepresent name of Joo Lee Chan Sdn Bhd (Private Limited).The founder, Ong Eng Suan was a migrant from the Tai Yuanclan who brought along with him, the village's traditionalwine-making skills and craftsmen to Malaysia
