Sago is a type of starch made from misty core, a variety of tropical oil palm, especially Rumbia tree .Sago trees are also a staple food source for indigenous peoples in Sabah and Sarawak, among them the Bisaya and Melanau tribes, as well as the lowlanders of New Guinea and Maluku, where they are called saxophones, rabbits and sago. The largest supply of sago comes from Southeast Asia, mainly Indonesia and Malaysia. Large quantities of sago are sent to Europe and North America for cooking purposes. It is traditionally cooked and eaten in various forms, such as ball-shaped rolls, mixed with boiling water to form pasta such as glue (papeda), or as a pancake.
