What is #TheLastPlasticStraw Movement? 

#TheLastPlasticStraw movement is about commencing a positive environmental change  by simply saying no to single use plastics. Plastic straws are one of the top 10 contributors to ocean plastic pollution across the globe. It is estimated that 437 million to 8.3 billion plastic straws are found on the world’s coastlines. The convenience that we enjoy now is at the expenses of our environment, especially the ocean. Each of us has a social responsibility to take care of our environment, and this includes reducing the consumption of single use plastics. With so many alternatives out there, there is just no excuse for single use! By joining this movement, we hope the plastic straw that you are using now will be #TheLastPlasticStraw. 

 

We invite businesses, governments, NGOs and even individuals to come together and do a part in promoting this global movement. #TheLastPlasticStraw also aligns to address United Nation’s sustainable development goals (SDGs), especially, Goal 14: Life Below Water - Conservation, promoting marine diversity and regulating fishing practices. By 2025, prevent and significantly reduce marine pollution of all kinds, in particular from land-based activities, including marine debris and nutrient pollution.


PROTECT AND RESTORE ECOSYSTEMS

By 2020, sustainably manage and protect marine and coastal ecosystems to avoid significant adverse impacts, including by strengthening their resilience, and take action for their restoration in order to achieve healthy and productive oceans.


Well, probably you won’t believe that we would be having more plastic than fish in the ocean one day. However, the Great Pacific Garbage Patch acts as the proof that plastic is the major source of pollution in the ocean and the constant unsustainable dynamic might eventually make it become a reality. In this post COVID-19 era, where hygiene is a big concern, we understand that plastic straws might be indispensable but please try an alternative like rice straws, bamboo straws or even bring your own straw.
