ENGLISH NAME: Butter Fruit, Borneo Avocado

MALAY NAME: Buah Engkalak, Buah Tebuluh

SPECIES NAME: Litsea garciae

FAMILY: Lauraceae

ORIGIN: Borneo in Malaysia, Indonesia and Philippines

PLANT DESCRIPTION: A tree that is native to Sarawak and Southwest Sabah regions usually cultivated for its edible fruit which has a similar flavor of avocado. In addition to its edible use, the Iban people also use the bark of the tree to treat insect stings and snakebites.

PLANT PARTS USED: Fruits, seeds and bark

EDIBLE USES:

?Fruits - Raw or cooked. The pulp of the fruit is eaten either raw or steamed with rice. It can also be preserved as pickles using unripe fruits and a salt solution or vinegar.

MEDICINAL USES:

?The Iban people also use the bark of the tree to treat insect stings, boils, burns, and snakebites.

?This Copper and Manganese rich fruit also support prostate health and heart health.

OTHER USES:

?An oil is extracted from the seeds is used to manufacture candles and soap.

?The pale, golden-yellow wood is used in construction.

PLANT CARE:

?Prefers a well-drained and fertile loamy soils, with full sun or semi-shade.

?Water the plant sufficiently but do not overwater.

?Fruits are green which turns to reddish color when ripened.

?Can be propagated by seeds.
