Evening primrose oil is extracted from seeds of the evening primrose plant (Oenothera biennis), a common wildflower found in North America, Europe and parts of Asia. The evening primrose plant was originally used by Native American tribes, who used the leaf as poultices to heal wounds and the nutty flavoured root as a staple food. During the 17th century in England, the plant was called the "King's cure-all" by herbalists, as it was considered the remedy for treating minor ailments.

Over the last 20 years, this oil has once again gained popularity for its medicinal properties and is now a common dietary supplement. Two essential fatty acids contained in evening primrose oil - gamma-linolenic acid (GLA) and linoleic acid (LA) are believed to benefit women's health.
