The war in Syria is the longest in recent history and likely to be one of the most brutal. 15 March 2021 marks a grim milestone of 10 years since the start of the war in Syria. Since the onset of this brutal war, children have been at its very centre and continue to pay the heaviest price which had devastating consequences on every Syrian child and their childhood.Inside Syria, nearly 5 million children need humanitarian assistance, with 2.6 million children internally displaced forced to leave their homes some several times. Another 2.5 million children fled across Syria’s borders into neighbouring countries and now live as refugees in Lebanon, Jordan, Iraq and Turkey.

The impact of the war on children’s lives has been profound on all ends. Every Syrian child has a story of how this war impacted them. Some have lost loved ones, some were forced to leave everything behind and run away, some witnessed their loved ones being killed or abducted, some lost years and years of schools, many had dreams that almost over-night they had to adjust.Among all of this, there continues to be incredible determination and strength among the Syrian people including children to find solutions, to make do, to be creative, to persist on continuing not only to live but to thrive. Many children were able to continue their school education, many finished their studies and joined the work force, and many decided to do everything possible not to give up on their dreams.

Children continue to be deprived of education!

After almost ten years of war in Syria, more than half of children continue to be deprived of education. The education system in Syria is chronically overstretched, underfunded, fragmented and unable to provide safe, equitable and sustained services to millions of children.

There are over 2.4 million children are out of school in Syria and nearly 40% of them are girls. Due to the impact of COVID-19, this number has increased which exacerbated the disruption to education in Syria.

One in three schools inside Syria can no longer be used because they were destroyed, damaged or are being used for military purposes. Children who are able to attend school often learn in overcrowded classrooms, and in buildings with insufficient water and sanitation facilities, electricity, heating or ventilation.

We are calling for the Malaysian community, and wider global community's to support and rebuild the lives of women and children in Syria. Education will remain as the beacon for millions of Syrian children and our support could realise this dream.
