By definition, descaling is a metal cleaning process that removes the buildup of limescale; a hard, off-white, chalky deposit that can impair the operation of various components

Citric Acid is part of the non-toxic 'Clean and Natural' Range and is a descaler that's made of natural acid found in citrus fruits. By keeping appliances free of limescale, less electricity is required to operate them and they will have a longer service life. Citric Acid can be used as a substitute for white vinegar.

Traditionally, the element in the kettle was always exposed and in contact with the water, so limescale build-up was one of the biggest causes of kettle failure.


Nowadays, our kettles mostly have the element hidden behind a metal base plate, which reduces the risk of element damage and lengthens their lives. This doesn't mean limescale isn't a problem, though.


Metal kettles can still get coated on the inside and on the base plate with limescale which, if dislodged, leaves unappealing chalky bits in the water. Plastic kettles are made of polypropylene, which doesn’t attract scale, but the metal base plate will. Kettles with built-in filters stop pieces of limescale from being poured into your drink but do not stop limescale build-up.

A descaling agent or chemical descaler is a liquid chemical substance used to remove limescale from metal surfaces in contact with hot water, such as in boilers, water heaters, and kettles. Limescale is either white or brown in colour due to the presence of iron compounds. Glass surfaces may also exhibit scaling stains, as can many ceramic surfaces present in bathrooms and kitchen, and descaling agents can be used safely to remove those stains without affecting the substrate since both ceramics and glass are unreactive to most acids
