Rocaltrol® contains calcitriol which occurs naturally in humans and is a biologically active form of vitamin D. It is used to treat people with osteoporosis but can also be prescribed by doctors for the treatment of low blood calcium in patients with renal osteodystrophy (a form of bone disease), hypoparathyroidism (reduced function of the parathyroid glands) and rickets. Rocaltrol® works by improving absorption of calcium from the diet, stimulating growth of healthy bones and reduce bone damage.

Indications/Uses
Established postmenopausal osteoporosis; renal osteodystrophy in patients w/ chronic renal failure particularly those undergoing hemodialysis; postsurgical or idiopathic hypoparathyroidism; pseudohypoparathyroidism; vit D-dependent rickets; hypophosphatemic vit D-resistant rickets; predialysis patients.

Dosage/Direction for Use
The optimal daily dose is based on patient's serum Ca level (individualised dose).


Contraindications
Hypersensitivity. All diseases associated w/ hypercalcemia.

Special Precautions
May trigger hypercalcemia w/ abrupt increase in Ca intake as a result of changes in diet or uncontrolled intake of Ca prep. May increase inorganic phosphate levels in serum. Avoid concurrent vit D prep intake. Maintain adequate fluid intake. Pregnancy. Monitor serum Ca levels in nursing mother & in infant.
