Pet Health Solutions’ (PHS) CardioMAX has quickly become our favorite heart support supplement for dogs. It tends to work better and faster for the widest range of dogs.

It’s also easy and a pleasure to feed. Dogs simply love these soft chews.

How does it compare to the Pet Wellbeing Young at Heart (Yah) and VetriScience Cardio Strength (VSCS)?
VSCS uses mostly Western ingredients that each target smaller parts of the overall system. It usually works faster than the PW Yah that takes a more systemic, holistic approach. If you sprained your ankle, for example, it’s usually good enough to ice it or take something that reduces the pain. But when it is your heart that is faltering or overworking, it might work out better in the long run if you look at it systemically and fix whatever it is that’s causing your heart to work too hard.
What’s great about CardioMAX is that it is like a combination of the two. It shares many same active ingredients as VSCS and adds such TCM mainstays as berberine and hawthorn. It works fast and also attempts to rectify your dog’s condition on a systemic level.

Why does it only has 40% of L-taurine as VSCS?
That is not the case if you compare the two on the same basis. VSCS’s listed 250mg L-taurine is for dogs up to 15kg while the 100mg in CardioMAX is for a 5kg dog. A 15kg dog would need to take 2 CardioMAX soft chews, doubling the dose of L-taurine. CardioMAX also adds the same amount of arginine for supercharged nitric oxide production, which can really take a big load off your dog’s heart.

Any drawback?
Based on all of the above, it would perhaps come at no surprise that CardioMAX can be significantly more expensive for larger dogs. Although the starting price is lower, one jar contains just 12 doses for the largest dogs.

How do I know if my dog needs CardioMAX?
Signs of heart problems in dogs include labored breathing, fluid in lungs/limbs/abdomen, fainting spells, coughing, poor appetite and reduced activity. But this is a condition that must be properly diagnosed by a veterinarian. If your vet detects any abnormality in your dog’s heart, which can be an ECG alarm or a relatively benign heart murmur, CardioMAX can be of great help to your dog.
It can also be used as a preventative in dog breeds that are predisposed to heart failure, especially when your dog is getting up there in age. These include popular breeds like golden and Labrador retrievers, poodles (the smaller ones), German shepherds, Pomeranians, Rottweilers, etc.

How many soft chews per day?
Factory instructions are on the label.
As a preventative, we recommend:
- 1 per day for dogs up to 30 pounds (15kg)
- 2 or 3 per day for larger dogs
