Experienced owners of large and giant breed dogs know that it can be an adventure to raise a puppy that will not develop joint problems prematurely. Joints and bones will break down in old age, for both people and dogs, but for large breed dogs, joint/bone/ligament disorders can also creep up when growing up.

This is perhaps not surprising when you consider that large breed puppies can double or triple in size twice from 2 to 8 or 12 months old. The first doubling in size (from 2 months to 4 months old) is usually not a problem for most puppies. Large breed puppies double in size from 4-8 months and giant breed puppies grow almost triply from 4-12 months. This period is where lots of owners buy dog food for large breed puppies for their pups. These dog foods contain a lot more fiber and fewer calories than the typical puppy food. The goal is to slow down their growth and prevent joint problems.

But even large breed puppy food may not be enough. Also, what if you don’t actually want to slow down your puppy’s growth? What if your goal is to raise oversized dogs with massive heads and chests?
