Dechra’s Vetradent is the only water additive we know of that can actually reduce tartar in cats and dogs. It’s been demonstrated in scientific studies to work, based on which the company would coin its Biotrate technology.

What is Biotrate?
The term is not important. What you want to know is that Vetradent is based on 3 completely safe active ingredients: sodium chloride, citric acid and zinc. Studies showed that the presence of these 3 substances breaks up the biofilms of bacteria that form tartar on your pet’s teeth. That’s exactly how Vetradent reduces tartar.

How does it compare to other brands of dental water additives?
Most well-known brands of water additive products are based on preventing tartar formation, rather than reducing existing tartar. They do this by killing bacteria that can group together to form biofilms of tartar on teeth.
This is why they often use a disinfectant active ingredient like chlorine, alcohol or chlorhexidine. For example, Synergylabs’ very popular Dental Fresh uses chlorine. Although these ingredients are safe for your pet in tiny amounts, the problem with using a disinfectant is twofold: 1) It will affect the odor, if not the taste, to some degree; 2) More importantly, this will disrupt the balance of microflora in your pet’s gut (some of both good and bad bacteria will be “disinfected”). You can forget about your pet realizing the benefits of probiotics if such a water addictive is used.
In contrast, all of the ingredients found in Vetradent have no known side effects. Even the preservatives are benign – whereas a number of other brands use parabens and such.

Is it really tasteless?
Vetradent is odorless when added to water but it makes the water much softer. It’s almost like Evian vs other bottled water.

What to do:
- Follow dilution instructions exactly
- Give your pet some Vetradent-infused water every day
- Only about 25% of your pet’s daily water consumption ought to be Vetradent-infused water. Given that the daily water requirement for a dog is 60ml per kg, a 10kg dog would need 600ml of water per day, of which approximately 150ml should have Vetradent in it. Of course, you can feel free to give your pet more.
- You can prepare a large amount and store it in a closed container for up to a week (in the fridge if you wish)

What NOT to do:
- Do not add too much water

Should I get the liquid or powder?
The liquid makes 12.5L and the powder 60L of Vetradent-infused water. But the powder might be harder to use (see below).

2 varieties - latest Dec 2025 expiry or later:
- Liquid (503ml): Add 2-tsp or 10ml to 250ml of water. You can use the cap to measure.
- Powder (300g): Add 1 scoop (provided) to 1L of hot water. Let the water cool in-room or in the fridge before offering to your pet.
