Its native plants have been used by the indigenous people of New Zealand for hundreds of years for their healing properties. Manuka honey is highly valued across the world but not just for its rich, smooth taste. Methylglyoxal, or MGO for short, is what gives Manuka honey its antibacterial activity. The concentration of methylglyoxal in the Manuka honey determines its MGO rating. The higher the MGO the more valued honey and the higher the level of antibacterial activity in the honey.
