Beras Etem or Black Etem Rice is a fragrant black medium grain cultivated traditionally by the indigenous people of Borneo highlands, the Lun Bawang in Ba'kalalan, Lawas, northeast highlands of Sarawak, Borneo. Cultivated in natural environment 1000m above sea level, the rice field is irrigated by the clean and unpolluted water from the mountain. Its signature black-purple colour exist naturally from a flavonoid known as anthocyanin, which is known to be high in anti-oxidants, nutrients and is able to reduce the level of free radicals in the body system. It is left unpolished to retain 100% of its nutrients and health values. Of those harvested, dedicated team from Antares Enterprise and Sarawak Specials selected the premium quality rice stocks, ensuring the rice is more flavorful, have a nutty taste and chewier after cooked.

What is Heirloom rice?

An old cultivar of rice variety, cultivated using traditional planting method that is passed down from generations by the local ethic communities. It is unique in characteristic, taste and quality.

White Rice VS Coloured Rice?

Rice grain consists of 3 main parts: the bran (protective layer), the germ (heart of grain) and the endosperm (body of grain).

Production of white rice removes much of the bran and germ of the grain leaving the endosperm. The bran and germ contain much of the grains’ mineral, vitamin, protein and phytochemicals (eg. antioxidants). Hence, white rice only contains higher proportion of carbohydrate and limited amount of other essential nutrients per grain.

Our coloured rice (whole grain) retained much of their nutrients as the bran and germ part of the grain remained intact after the processing process. Hence, coloured rice has a better balance between calorie content and other essential nutrients like vitamins, minerals, proteins, etc.
