Vetoquinol’s Universal Medicated (UM) Shampoo is so named because it works for all skin conditions. It’s formulated for cats, dogs and horses.

If you’re not sure what’s wrong with your pet’s skin, the UM shampoo can treat them all, whether it’s fungal/yeast, bacterial, mange and other parasites, atopic, greasy skin, allergy outbreaks, anything.

For the most severe cases of fungal infection, you can also check our other listings for Vetoquinol’s Sebozole shampoo, which adds the antifungal miconazole.

That said, Vetoquinol’s UM shampoo should be more than enough for most. Like Sebozole, it is a very serious shampoo that smells more like hospitals than shampoo. You will have no doubt the first time you use it that this is a very strong shampoo.

Is it too strong for my pet?
If that’s what you’re thinking, then maybe your pet’s skin infection is not too bad. If that’s the case, you should try a milder shampoo.
But if you are determined to improve your pet’s quality of life by getting rid of stubborn skin infection and bestowing your pet with itch-free skin, this is the shampoo that you must try.

Why does it smell like hospital?
It’s a strong disinfectant smell. It contains 2% each of chloroxylenol, salicylic acid and sulfur. Please check our PHS Sulfox/Dechra DermaBenSS listing for more info about the contributions of salicylic acid and sulfur… except that Vetoquinol’s UM shampoo uses 2% chloroxylenol rather than benzoyl peroxide.
Chloroxylenol has the disinfecting power of chlorhexidine and the deep cleansing properties of benzoyl peroxide. That’s the same disinfectant used in Dettol antiseptic liquid, which contains 4.8% chloroxylenol, as compared to 0.5% in Dettol hand wash – so the 2% chloroxylenol in this shampoo is somewhere in between.
In essence, whether your pet’s fungal/bacterial skin infection responds better to chlorhexidine or benzoyl peroxide, the UM shampoo could be just as or even more effective, especially considering the additional presence of 2% sulfur and 2% salicylic acid (the maximum amount in any shampoo).

Is it wise to switch shampoo?
Sometimes this is just what you need to overcome a very stubborn fungal skin infection. If you are currently using a good antifungal shampoo that’s helping your pet but not quite all the way, a switch to another highly competent antifungal shampoo may just do the trick. This is a common practice among veterinarians in countries that have a good selection of high quality shampoo.
