How to use?

a. Begin by enjoying the colorful pictures first.

Let the children have fun looking at the pictures. Then, ask the question on the reverse side of the card. Allow as many children as possible to say their answers.

This is to encourage the children to be active. The same correct answer when repeated helps children to remember better.

Using this same card, you can add on your own questions which suit the learning style of the child. Begin with the easy questions whereby the answers can be found in the pictures. Eg. ‘Do cats have whiskers?’, ‘Do cats have fur or feathers?’, ‘What is the colour of this cat?’

b. Proceed with more challenging questions that do not have very obvious answers.

E.g. ‘What sound does a cat make?’, ‘What do cats like to eat?’

c. Play games with the flashcards.

E.g. Divide the children into small groups. Give each group cards from 2 different titles, such as ‘Animals! Animals!’ and ‘Animals That Live in Water’. Shuffle the cards and get the children to place the pictures under two headings – ‘Land Animals’ and ‘Water Animals’. The fastest group wins.

d. Turn the flashcards into a storytelling, singing or chit-chat session.

E.g. Hold a flashcard of an aeroplane from the set ‘Things That Move’. Get the children to talk about anything they know about aeroplanes. Then ask the children to sing a song on aeroplanes, and get the children to move and make the noise like an aeroplane.

e. Stick the colourful cards on a board in the classroom or in your child’s room.

Having the cards put up makes it very convenient for the children to read them each time they see them. This would also reinforce the child’s memory of what they have learned.
