Baristas have started thinking about ways of protecting the coffee puck and mitigating the force with which it is hit by the water jets; the most common solution of all is to use a paper filter. Although this solution is partly effective, it nevertheless presents several problems such as the continuous waste of paper and the loss of time in cutting out the filters. However, a solution has been presented from lower shower screen. A screen which is very solid, heavy and has a metal structure with dense mesh.

bean2cup’s stainless steel lower shower screen with very high quality and with precision mesh is designed to reduce channeling during coffee extraction. Moreover, it helps to achieve a more uniform shot and minimise puck disturbance as well as keeping the shower screen clean too. It is placed directly on the coffee puck, after tamping and suits bottomless portafilters.

Overall benefits:
• Ensure a very gentle and even flooding of coffee puck
• Great reduction in the formation of channeling issues
• Puck is always perfectly intact at the end of the extraction
• Increase of about 2% of the extraction yield
• Possible to perceive an increased quality of the shot
• Simplifying the process of cleaning

Recommendation:
Slightly increase the extraction temperature as the metal mesh of which the lower shower screen is made will absorb some of the heat. We recommend increasing the temperature by 1 ~ 3ºC.
