Does Schweppes soda water affect dental health badly?

One of the biggest concerns with carbonated water is its effect on teeth, since the enamel is directly exposed to the acid.

There is very little research on the topic, but one study found that carbonated mineral water only harms tooth enamel slightly more than non-carbonated water. Moreover, it's 100 times less harmful than a sugary beverage.

In one study, carbonated soft drinks had the potential to destroy tooth enamel, but only if they contained sugar. In fact, Gatorade is more harmful than a sugar-free carbonated drink (Diet Coke).

In another study, enamel samples were placed in different beverages for 24 hours. Sugar-containing carbonated and non-carbonated drinks cause more significant loss of yeast than diet drinks.

Another review of several studies found that the combination of sugar and carbonates could lead to serious cavities.

However, carbonated water appears to pose little of a risk to oral health. Only sugary drinks are harmful. If you are concerned about your oral health, try drinking carbonated water with a meal or rinsing your mouth with water after drinking.
