What is Advocate?

Advocate is a spot-on insecticide treatment which comes in a liquid form and is applied to the skin on the back of the animal’s neck. It is a yellow-brown solution which contains the active ingredients imidacloprid and moxidectin and it is used to treat a range of parasites in dogs, cats and ferrets. Advocate comes in several concentrations so that different sizes of pets can be given accurate doses. Bayer manufactures the treatment which comes in small white pipettes, either in packets of 3 or 6.

What is Advocate used for?

Advocate is used to treat and prevent fleas (Ctenocephalides felis) in both dogs and cats and can be used as part of a routine treatment regime for flea allergic dermatitis (FAD). Advocate is also used to treat against ear mites (Otodectes cyanotis) and can be used in the prevention of heartworm (Dirofilaria immitis) and several intestinal worms in dogs and cats including roundworm, heartworm, lungworm and whipworm. These worms are also known by their scientific Latin names: Ancylostoma spp, Toxocara spp, Uncinaria stenocephala and Trichuris vulpis.

In dogs specifically, Advocate can be used to treat biting lice (Trichodectes canis), sarcoptic mange caused by the mite Sarcoptes scabeii and demodecosis, a skin disease caused by another mite Demodex canis.

In ferrets, Advocate is used to treat and prevent fleas and also to prevent heartworm.

Advocate Dosage and Administration

Advocate is applied topically to the skin on the back of the neck – usually once a month or every four weeks. It should be applied to an area where your pet cannot reach to lick it off, usually between the shoulder blades.

The dose of Advocate required will depend on your pet’s weight and comes in several strengths so that any sized animal can be given an accurate dose. Advocate can be given safely alongside most veterinary medicines.

Dogs – 10mg/kg bodyweight imidacloprid and 2.5mg/kg bodyweight moxidectin. This equates to 0.1ml/kg bodyweight Advocate dog solution.
