Deskripsi Produk
Turning Perspectives on South East Asian Music is a book on interregional and intercultural exchange of music practices. The author connects the music practices of Malaysia to other regions and histories such as for Yamen, the Middle East and India or that of Indochina to East Asia. As a musicologist and ethnomusicologist with an anthropological background, the author is not content with merely presenting transcriptions and illustrations and motional patterns and gestures. She goes beyond, extending her scope further by relating music to gender, cultural and psychological identity, social functions and the influence of culture on the preservation and renovation of music. For example, in the essays on Teaching Ca Tru and Teaching Humility, and Zapin Music-History and Future, she examines the philosophical question of preservation strategies in North Vietnam and Malaysia. Further, in her essays Cultural Environment and Gendering Musical Instruments, Gender Construction in Shamanism and Lullabies and Some Prejudices, the author tackles gender issues in music, relating gender to musical instruments, to the sound and motion codes of the shaman and the maintenance of gender biases and prejudices through lullabies.
