Benzalkonium chloride (BKC) is the most widely used preservative in ophthalmology. 

It is a quaternary ammonium compound that acts as an antimicrobial agent by 

denaturing proteins and disrupting cytoplasmic membranes.

BKC multipurpose disinfectant.
