Personal Selection:

The spray bottle is a tool that is intriguing because it is used in many scenarios yet often overlooked. For example, they can be used with hair products, cleaning supplies, food products, perfumes, medicines, paint, or nearly any liquid. Also, depending on the purpose, the design of the bottle may change. Lastly, it can be interesting to students who enjoy science because the design addresses the effect of applying force to a situation with built up pressure.


History:

The exact origin of the spray bottle is unknown, however, similar tools were created before the 20th century. One theory is that the spray bottle began as a glass container with a rubber bulb that could be pressed to create pressure to extract liquid. In the 20th century, plastic became more popular and Dr. Jules Montenier created the first plastic spray bottle. Montenier made his version of the bottle to apply his personal deodorant called Stopette. In his bottle, you squeeze the container and holes on the top of the bottle release the deodorant. The design was then improved in 1960 with the addition of the nozzle and spray trigger, which made it quicker and more effective to spray the fluid.


Function/Purpose:

The purpose of the spray bottle is to apply a misted layer of a liquid to a person or object. The bottle transitions the liquid into a mist in a quick and easy manner that assures an even spread of a small amount.


User:

Because it is such a versatile tool, any person (older than an infant) can find use in a spray bottle in a daily routine, occupation, or personal use.


Materials + Production:

The majority of spray bottles today are either made from plastic, aluminum, or glass. They basic elements to a spray bottle are its base that contains the liquid, internal tube, and spray nozzle that can be different depending on the purpose. The bottles are now mass produced in factory assembly lines that mold the container, fill it with liquid, insert the tube, and attach the nozzle at rapid speeds.
